First step: Look at the due date! If you want to earn the most credit it is recommended that you work well in advance. That way you can contact your instructor and he will go over the work with you, then you can make revisions. If you wait till the due date then the work earns the grade on that day. NO LATE WORK !
This first assignment sets the format for the others. You will write three paragraphs (about a page and a half) and each must demonstrate that you accomplished an objective. All facts MUST BE CITED, format is up to you. The acceptable citation formats are: MLA, APA, or Chicago. Your instructor loves Chicago, but he’s a history nut.
CLO number one reads: Explain the rights specified in the Constitution and the Bill of Rights
That sounds easy enough, but you could easily write three books on the subject and not do a thorough job. What this assignment is asking is that you start at the very beginning.
Find a copy of the Constitution, including the Bill of Rights, read it and take notes. In one paragraph identify five (5) specific rights that YOU have as an individual. Also, answer the question: what “rights” do you have that you didn’t find specifically mentioned?
For your second paragraph: Write about how you see these rights in your daily life. This is not hypothetical, you need to talk about direct impacts on you as an individual.
For your third paragraph you need to contact a GCC Librarian. You can do so by Chat, E-mail or Phone and the contact information is on the Library web page. Specifically, you will ask them how to find information about SCOTUS rulings on government or academic databases. Note that after this assignment no other types of resources are acceptable for coursework. In your last paragraph, write about the interaction. What did you find? Who did you work with? Treat it like testimony in court.
That’s it. If done well you will easily take up more than a page and a half or writing. If you go much over two, you are overworking the assignment. If you have any questions, contact either your instructor or the Librarians. They have worked closely with your instructor to design each assignment.
Why do it? I started adding these comments last semester after students recommended it in another course. It is a fair request to know how an assignment helps you meet the goals of the class, and what skills you are hopefully learning. Paragraph one is asking you to be a basic learner again. Sitting down and actually looking over a document to search for key items is an important research and learning tool. Those of you headed for a paralegal/law enforcement career will need to be excellent at it. Plus, frankly, most Americans have never read the whole Constitution and rely on what they think they know. Time to take a few minutes and actually read the thing.
The second paragraph is focused on Rights as a living thing. This isn’t theory, it is what impacts everything from what gun we can go hunting with, to who gets admitted to a college, it impacts how people and corporations treat you and whether you are abused by government mandates and rules. So the assignment asks you to reflect on that as it applies to your own life.
For paragraph three you are starting the process of being good academic researchers. Again, if you are headed for a paralegal career, it is critically important that you know where the correct Databases are. If you as simply headed on to a higher degree it is also important that you learn how to cut your workload and find the sources that earn you the highest grade. Librarians are your ticket to all of that. They can cut hours off your search time simply by pointing you at the best resource and they can shoot down poor sources before your professor cringes. This course assumes that you are new to all of that. If not, fine, this paragraph will be easy, If not, have a pleasant introduction to the people who can help you the most with your research projects.
